Hong Kong: Women Press Freedom Condemns Organized Harassment of Hong Kong Journalists, Including HKJA Chair Selina Cheng

September 17, 2024 - Hong Kong

Women Press Freedom strongly denounces the systematic and organized threats and harassment targeting at least 15 journalists, including HKJA’s chair Selina Cheng, and their families, employers and neighbors.

The journalists - working in multiple media outlets in Hong Kong - were sent anonymous threats online and by post. Such targeting of journalists not only threatens press freedom but also discourages truth seeking in a polarizing world.

In the past 5 years, WPF has documented at least 31 cases of threats to women journalists in Hong Kong for their work with at least two cases recorded this year alone. Such arbitrary curbs on press freedom must end now.
