West Bank: WPF Denounces Detention of Givara Budeiri and Crew by Palestinian Forces

January 19, 2025 - West Bank, Ramallah

Palestinian Authority security forces detain Al-Jazeera journalist Givara Budeiri and her cameraperson while reporting live outside Israel’s Ofer prison. They were covering the planned release of 90 Palestinian prisoners under a truce between Israel and Hamas.

The detention by the Palestinian Preventive Security (PPS) in Beitunia violates press freedom and is part of a broader crackdown on independent journalism. Earlier this month, the PA suspended Al Jazeera TV's broadcasting in the West Bank, accusing the news service of spreading "inciting material."

Women Press Freedom condemns these detentions and demands the PPS immediately release Givara and her colleague. The harassment of journalists and the press must end.
