Honduras: WPF Condemns Attack on Honduran Journalist María Fernanda Martínez

February 16, 2025 - Honduras, Tegucigalpa

Women Press Freedom condemns the violent attack on journalist María Fernanda Martínez by supporters of the Libre party in Honduras. No journalist should face violence for doing their job.

Martínez was covering an event for the capital’s mayor when a mob tried to seize her camera. She was forced to run, but a woman attacked her, injuring her nose and leaving her with bruises. The journalist suffered a deviated septum and reported that her glasses were stolen.

Honduras is weeks away from internal elections, and journalists are working under increasing threats. The state of emergency is worsening the situation, putting independent reporting at risk.

During this volatile period it is of extreme importance that all political leaders stop any hostility toward the press. We stand in solidarity with María Fernanda Martínez. Honduran authorities must investigate this attack, prosecute those involved and protect journalists from further violence.
