Turkiye: State Targets Leftist Journalist and Activists, WPF Condemns Detention of Züleyha Müldür

January 21, 2025 - Turkiye, Istanbul

Women Press Freedom demands the immediate release of ETHA reporter Züleyha Müldür, detained during widespread police raids this morning.

A nationwide operation led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office targeted the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), Socialist Women's Assemblies (SKM), and the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF), resulting in house raids at multiple addresses across the country. At least 37 people have been detained.

Police imposed a secrecy order on the operation, restricting access to lawyers for the detainees.

These raids are part of an ongoing pattern to silence independent and critical voices, especially those covering political opposition and social/leftist movements.

Women Press Freedom condemns the unjust detentions of journalists and activists and denounces the Turkish state’s continued persecution of the press. We call on the international community, especially the EU, to publicly condemn Turkish authorities for their attacks on the press. Journalism is not terrorism, and the continued conflation of reporting with acts of terror is unjust. Attacks on critical press must end.
