Croatia: Police Detain Mirjana Radulović & Colleague After Reporting Newsroom Break-ins

February 13, 2025 - Croatia, Pula

Radio Rojc editors Mirjana Radulović and Branimir Slijepčević were detained in Pula after calling police for help.

The journalists had reported ongoing break-ins at their newsroom. But when police arrived, they demanded IDs without cause. Radulović objected. Officers handcuffed and detained her—despite her cries of pain.

Slijepčević intervened, warning that Radulović had health issues. Instead of de-escalating, police detained him too. Footage shows officers using excessive force on both journalists.

Radulović & Slijepčević were released overnight, but this incident intimidates independent media. Journalists must be free to work and contact police for help without fear of police harassment.

Women Press Freedom condemns this brutal detention and demands an explanation. Why are journalists being punished for seeking police assistance?

We demand accountability from Croatian police. Authorities must investigate this attack on press freedom & ensure journalists are protected—not persecuted.
