Brazil: British Journalist Charlotte Peet Missing After Traveling to São Paulo

February 19, 2025 - Brazil, Sao Paulo

Women Press Freedom is deeply concerned about the disappearance of British journalist Charlotte Peet. The freelance correspondent, who has reported for Al Jazeera and The Times, went missing after arriving in São Paulo.

Peet's last confirmed communication was on February 8, when she told a friend she was in São Paulo and planned to travel to Rio de Janeiro. Unable to contact her after this, her family reported her missing. Initial investigations confirmed she boarded a flight from London's Gatwick Airport to São Paulo, but after her arrival, her whereabouts became unknown.

Her case, first reported in Rio, has now been transferred to São Paulo, where homicide and missing persons investigators are involved.

Peet previously worked as a foreign correspondent in Brazil for two years. Her disappearance raises serious concerns for her safety. It also highlights the broader risks faced by journalists in the country, where threats and violence against the press are on the rise.

The UK Foreign Office is supporting Peet's family and coordinating with Brazilian authorities.

Every moment counts in a missing person case. We call for transparency, urgency, and swift action to locate Charlotte.
