Netherlands: Women Press Freedom Calls for Investigation After Journalist Detained in Amsterdam Protest

November 12, 2024 - The Netherlands, Amsterdam

Women Press Freedom condemns the arrest and nine-hour detention of a photographer at Amsterdam's Dam Square during a pro-Palestine protest, despite her presenting a valid press card.

Such detentions are rare in the Netherlands, yet they echo a global issue where law enforcement disproportionately targets journalists. Our data reveals that 250 of 365 press freedom violations against women journalists during protests were committed by law enforcement, with journalists facing significant risk while covering anti-government, Black Lives Matter, and women’s rights protests.

We call for an immediate investigation into this incident to ensure accountability and reinforce protections for journalists. Press freedom must be upheld without compromise.
