West Bank: WPF Condemns the Killing of Journalist Shatha al-Sabbagh

December 28, 2024 - West Bank, Jenin

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the killing of Shatha al-Sabbagh, a journalism student and promising reporter, who was fatally shot by a suspected sniper from Palestinian Authority (PA) forces while documenting the ongoing violence in Jenin on December 28, 2024.

Shatha’s untimely death occurred during the PA’s military campaign, "Operation Protect the Homeland," an initiative marked by escalated violence and targeting of militant groups in the Jenin refugee camp. Sabbagh, a student at Al-Quds Open University, was determined to tell the story of Jenin amid ongoing violence. According to her colleague Jarah Khalaf, “She aspired to be a strong voice for her community.” Her final Instagram post documenting events in Jenin was shared just hours before her death.

Her bravery and commitment to shedding light on her community’s struggles must not be forgotten.

We demand a full, transparent, and independent investigation into Shatha’s killing. Any individuals found responsible must be held accountable, and the practice of targeting journalists must end. Journalism is not a crime; it is a pillar of democracy and a voice for the voiceless.

The international community and press freedom organizations must unite in demanding justice for Shatha. We call on the Palestinian Authority to ensure that such heinous acts do not go unpunished.
