Turkiye: Police Beat and Threaten Heval Önkol and Ceylan Şahinli at Rally, WPF Calls for Investigation

October 13, 2024 - Turkiye, Diyarbakır

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the violent obstruction of journalists by police at DEM Party's "freedom" rally in Diyarbakır.

Heval Önkol was beaten and threatened, while Ceylan Şahinli faced multiple attempts to obstruct her reporting. At one point, an officer tried to destroy her camera and forcibly removed her from the scene. The intimidation continued throughout the day.

These attacks on journalists covering political events are alarming and unacceptable. We call for an investigation into these assaults and demand an end to police violence.
