Turkiye: Police Assault Journalist Fatoş Sarıkaya, Preventing Filming of Protests

January 13, 2025 - Turkiye, Mersin

Police in Mersin beat and obstruct Fatoş Sarıkaya from filming, throwing her press card to the ground.

The harassment occurred while Sarıkaya was covering protests that erupted after the government jailed the co-mayors of Akdeniz district and replaced them with a trustee, sparking claims of a "political coup."

Women Press Freedom condemns this targeted assault on Sarıkaya, which undermines the public's right to information. We demand immediate action from authorities against the officers involved. Journalists must be able to report without fear of violence
