Turkiye: Açık Radyo Shut Down by Authorities in Attempt to Stifle Press Freedom

October 16, 2024 - Istanbul, Turkiye

Women Press Freedom condemns the Turkish government's decision to shut down Açık Radyo, a vital platform for social, political, and cultural dialogue in Istanbul.

Silencing media voices is a clear violation of press freedom and undermines the public's right to information. The station's closure, ordered by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) for its use of the term "Armenian genocide," stifles important conversations essential to a democratic society.

We stand in solidarity with the journalists and staff of Açık Radyo and urge Turkish authorities to reverse this decision.
