Chile: Conviction in Francisca Sandoval's Murder Brings Justice, WPF Urges Fair Sentencing

October 16, 2024 - Chile, Santiago

Women Press Freedom welcomes the conviction of Marcelo Naranjo for the murder of journalist Francisca Sandoval. Naranjo shot into a crowd during a protest in Santiago on May 1, 2022, fatally wounding Sandoval. The court found him guilty beyond a doubt.

Sandoval was on assignment for Canal Señal 3 La Victoria when she was shot and was mother to a young child. Sentencing is scheduled for October 28, with prosecutors seeking a 30-year prison term.

While this verdict brings some justice to Sandoval's family and colleagues, we urge the court to impose a fair punishment for this horrific crime.
