Togo: Yvette Sossou Among Six Reporters Assaulted During Togo Opposition Meeting

September 29, 2024 - Togo, Lomé

A group of protesters stormed an opposition party meeting and assaulted journalist Yvette Sossou from La Dépêche. She was grabbed, knocked to the ground, punched, and left with severe abdominal pain and headaches. Her phone, equipment, and money were stolen.

Sossou was one of at least six journalists attacked, with some beaten and their gear taken or destroyed, as security forces stood by.

Women Press Freedom condemns this horrific attack on reporters covering a political event. Togolese authorities must urgently investigate, punish the perpetrators, and protect journalists.
