Somalia: Politician Demeans and Belittles Journalist Amina Ibrahim Abdirahman

September 19, 2024 - Somalia, Mogadishu

Maay-language journalist Amina Ibrahim Abdirahman was harassed at a press conference in Mogadishu. While questioning Foreign Minister Fiqi about Somalia-Ethiopia tensions, an official interrupted her and told her to stop speaking.

Foreign Minister Fiqi later dismissed her question entirely. Amina described feeling "frightened, belittled, and demeaned."

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the growing discrimination against Maay-speaking journalists. We demand accountability from government officials and call for respect for all journalists.
