Iran: Women Press Freedom Condemns Intimidation of Maryam Shabani by Iran's Supreme Court Chief

September 16, 2024 - Iran, Tehran

Women Press Freedom expresses solidarity with Maryam Shabani, who faced threats and intimidation from Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, the Head of Iran's Supreme Court, at President Pezeshkian's press conference.

Montazeri implied that Shabani's attire, specifically her headscarf revealing a small portion of her hair, was inappropriate. We strongly criticize the efforts to silence journalists like Shabani, who courageously navigate challenges to report the truth.

The repressive climate in Iran, which ranks as the top jailer of journalists worldwide as documented by Women Press Freedom, underscores the pressing need for reform and safeguarding fundamental press freedoms.

We urge Iran to halt its suppression of women journalists.
