Angola: Ana da Silva Miguel Freed After Over a Year in Jail for Criticizing President

January 01, 2025 - Angola, Luanda

Women Press Freedom celebrates the release of Ana da Silva Miguel (also known as Neth Nahara), the popular influencer jailed for criticizing President João Lourenço on TikTok.

Arrested in August 2023, Ana was sentenced to two years in prison for a video accusing the president of mismanagement. While behind bars for over a year, Ana was repeatedly denied access to essential HIV medication.

Ana’s release, follows a presidential pardon, alongside four other activists and journalists. We are delighted that Ana may now be reunited with her loved ones and receive proper medical care.

These releases mark a significant victory for freedom of speech and a win against political repression in Angola. We commend the President for this long-overdue decision and urge authorities to continue respecting the rights of critics and end the unjust detention and persecution of those who speak out.
