Albania: Women Press Freedom Denounces Attack on Alketa Shaba by Opposition Demonstrator

October 7, 2024 - Albania, Tirana

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the verbal attack and physical assault on Top News journalist Alketa Shaba during a live broadcast in Tirana by an opposition demonstrator while she covered opposition-led protests. The attack on Shaba and the camera operator violates press freedom and jeopardizes journalists' safety.

Such violence against media professionals is unjustifiable and requires prompt and resolute action by the authorities.

Women Press Freedom expresses solidarity with Shaba and all journalists facing threats while fulfilling their crucial roles. We demand accountability for the attacker and advocate for enhanced protection for women journalists to safeguard their well-being in their journalistic endeavors. Acts of violence against journalists must not go unaddressed, and we call for justice to be served in this instance.
