Venezuela: WPF Condemns Arrest of Carmela Longo Amid Crackdown on Press

August 25, 2024 - Venezuela, Caracas

Updated: August 28, 2024

On August 28, 2024, Carmela Longo was released after being charged with terrorism and inciting hatred. Arrested during police raid on her Caracas home, she faces restrictions, including a ban on leaving the country and discussing her case.

Her detention is part of a broader crackdown on journalists following the disputed July 28 election, with at least 8 other reporters also detained.

Women Press Freedom condemns this persecution and demands the baseless charges against Longo be dropped. We call for immediate international pressure on the Venezuelan govt to end these repressive actions.

Longo, recently fired from pro-government newspaper Últimas Noticias, is the 4th woman journalist detained since the disputed July 28 election.

Women Press Freedom denounces the Maduro regime's crackdown on press and demands the immediate release of all wrongfully detained journalists.
