United States: Houston Reporter Abigail Dye’s Deepfake Video Raises Alarm on AI Misuse

October 3, 2024 - United States, Texas

Women Press Freedom is deeply concerned by the misuse of AI to create a deepfake video of FOX 26 Houston reporter, Abigail Dye. This is a blatant violation of Dye’s identity and poses a serious threat to public trust in journalism.

Disturbingly, the United States currently lacks federal laws regulating or banning such technology. We call for urgent legislative action to curb the malicious use of AI and protect journalists from exploitation.

This year alone, Women Press Freedom has documented at least 10 deepfake cases targeting women journalists across countries like Germany, Russia, Denmark, the UK, Ireland, Peru, India, and Bulgaria.
