Ukraine: Armed Men Threaten and Harass Espreso TV Journalist Maria Ivanovska

December 09, 2024 - Ukraine, Kremenchuk

On December 9, 2024, Espreso TV journalist Maria Ivanovska was threatened by an armed man in Kremenchuk while investigating alleged sales of banned Russian oil products.

The man blocked her car, threatened to break her phone, and demanded she delete footage, claiming the area was a "special regime facility." More men arrived, one claiming to be from a "security service" but refusing to specify which.

Ivanovska called the police and filed a complaint about obstruction of professional activity. While her phone was not damaged, she could not leave the area without police assistance.

Police later interrogated Ivanovska, her driver, and cameraman, citing signs prohibiting filming. However, the journalist denies any restrictions and states the area involved companies linked to criminal cases.

Women Press Freedom denounces these aggressive actions. Security concerns must not be used to obstruct or intimidate journalists. Authorities must ensure clarity for the press and protect journalists from such incidents in the future.
