Turkiye: Kurdish Journalist Beritan Canözer's Prison Sentence Upheld

November 22, 2024 - Turkiye, Ankara

On November 22, 2024, the Court of Cassation has upheld Beritan Canözer’s prison sentence for "terrorist propaganda," stemming from her social media posts from 2013-2016.

Canözer now faces 10 months in prison—another Kurdish journalist unjustly persecuted under draconian anti-terror laws. She has endured raids, detentions, and 8 lawsuits simply for her journalism.

Women Press Freedom is outraged by this decision. Beritan is a journalist, not a terrorist. She should be free to report on her community, not punished with fabricated charges. We stand in solidarity with Beritan and demand Turkish authorities stop targeting Kurdish journalists.
