Sudan: Women Press Freedom Demands Justice for Slain Journalist Hanan Adam

December 10, 2024 - Sudan, Al Madina Arab

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the brutal murder of journalist Hanan Adam and her brother by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Adam, a journalist for the Ministry of Culture and Information in Al-Jazirah state and correspondent for Al-Maidan (the Sudanese Communist Party's newspaper), was killed alongside her brother in their home.

This heinous act raises the journalist death toll in Sudan to 15 since the war began in April 2023, including 3 women journalists.

Women Press Freedom demands that the RSF be held accountable for the killing of Adam. The violence against journalists must end. Targeting members of the press constitutes a war crime under international law and cannot be tolerated.

We also denounce the ongoing media blackouts shielding these atrocities from global scrutiny. While both sides in the conflict use this tactic, the RSF in particular has weaponized it to suppress reports of their crimes. Restoring communication is essential for transparency, accountability, and press freedom.

Women Press Freedom extends our deepest condolences to Hanan Adam’s family and loved ones.
