Spain: Women Press Freedom Denounces Instagram Suspension of Cristina Fallarás for Exposing Politician's Gender-Based Violence

November 2, 2024 - Spain, Madrid

Women Press Freedom condemns the violation that led to the temporary suspension of journalist Cristina Fallarás' Instagram account. The closure occurred shortly after she posted an anonymous accusation of gender-based violence against Spanish politician Íñigo Errejón, raising serious concerns about the suppression of critical voices addressing issues of gender-based violence.

While we welcome the reinstatement of Fallarás' account, it is troubling that her work—particularly in amplifying the voices of survivors and sharing testimonies of sexual assault and harassment—was met with such a drastic response. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists, especially women, in exercising their right to free expression and advocating for human rights.

Women Press Freedom stands in solidarity with Fallarás and all journalists dedicated to shedding light on the urgent issue of gender-based violence. We urge social media platforms to take immediate action to prevent such violations in the future. It is essential that they create a safer environment for journalists, allowing them to fulfill their crucial role in society without fear of retaliation or censorship.
