Somalia: Security Officers Brutally Beat Shukri Caab, Forcing Her into Hiding

December 18, 2024 - Somalia, Mogadishu

Women Press Freedom condemns the horrific assault on journalist Shukri Caabi by five National Intelligence & Security Agency (NISA) officers.

While covering a protest in Mogadishu, Caabi was beaten with a pistol & stick, left with injuries to her head & hand, and forced into hiding. Her equipment was also confiscated, silencing her reporting.

This brutal attack by law enforcement is an attack on press freedom. We demand immediate justice & accountability. Authorities, particularly the NISA, must investigate and identify the perpetrators - attacks on the press cannot be allowed to occur with impunity. The journalist’s safety must be ensured.

We stand with Shukri and wish her a swift recovery.
