Russia: Authorities Initiate Criminal Investigation of Catherine Norris Trent

October 6, 2024 - Russia, Kursk

Women Press Freedom strongly denounces Russia's flagrant violations against journalists, as demonstrated by the latest unjust persecution of Catherine Norris Trent. The FSB has launched legal proceedings against journalist Catherine Norris Trent, who is affiliated with the French television channel France 24. A total of 14 foreign journalists have encountered comparable allegations since August 17th.

The unwarranted suppression of media practitioners, coupled with the criminalization of their journalistic endeavors, represents a severe encroachment on press freedom and a recurring strategy employed by the Russian government to manipulate information dissemination.

Women Press Freedom demands Russian authorities respect and uphold the rights and safeguards afforded to journalists. The targeting of media personnel for carrying out their professional duties must come to an end, and accountability must be enforced for those perpetrating such violations. It is imperative that immediate action be taken to halt these transgressions.
