Mozambique: WPF Denounces Detention of South African Journalist Bongani Siziba Amid Post-Election Unrest

November 14, 2024 - Mozambique, Maputo

South African journalist Bongani Siziba and cameraman Sbonelo Mkhasibe were detained in Maputo on Nov 14 while reporting on post-election unrest. After significant efforts by their outlet, News Central TV, and the South African Consulate, they were released.

Their detention raises serious concerns about press freedom amid political tensions following Mozambique's controversial elections. Journalists must be able to report without fear of persecution.

Women Press Freedom calls on Mozambican authorities to respect press freedom and stop targeting journalists.
