Iran: Jina Modares-Gorji Ordered to Prison Amid Continued Legal Harassment by Iranian Regime

October 22, 2024 - Iran, Tehran

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the continued harassment and unjust treatment of journalist and women’s rights activist Jina Modares-Gorji. The recent order for her to report to Sanandaj Prison, following a notice from the Sanandaj Criminal Enforcement Court, is a blatant violation of her rights and a troubling example of the ongoing suppression of freedom of expression and dissent.

Modares-Gorji has already faced considerable injustice, having initially been sentenced to 21 years in prison, a sentence that was later reduced to 2 years and 4 months.

Her repeated arrests—first in September 2022, followed by another in April 2023—highlight the relentless targeting of those who dare to speak out for women's rights and social justice.

We also express our deep concern over the temporary closure of her bookstore, which was penalized for allegedly “not complying with Islamic hijab requirements.”

Women Press Freedom stands in solidarity with Jina Modares-Gorji and calls for her immediate release, as well as the cessation of all forms of persecution against her and other individuals fighting for women's rights and freedom of speech. We urge the international community to take a stand against these violations and support the fundamental rights of all journalists and activists.
