Georgia: WPF Condemns Continued Attacks on Journalists Covering Anti-Government Protests

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the continuing attacks on press covering anti-government protests.
TV Pirveli journalist Nanuka Kajaia was threatened live on air in Tbilisi on December 17, 2024. A man yelled, "I'll throw this glass at her," while police briefly detained but quickly released the aggressor without further action.
A day earlier, in Batumi, Eter Turadze, editor of Batumelebi, was obstructed while covering a protest at the Constitutional Court. After questioning the police chief about sanctions on protesters, law enforcement forced her to leave.
These incidents reflect a broader effort to silence critical voices and suppress reporting on street demonstrations against the government, undermining the democratic fabric of the country. Law enforcement's failure to protect journalists and, in some cases, active role in their intimidation is unacceptable.
Women Press Freedom stands in solidarity with Georgian journalists who continue to report on protests despite the risks they face. We commend their bravery and commitment to their profession. The assaults against them must stop immediately, and authorities must do their job and take swift and transparent action to safeguard press freedom and ensure justice. Those targeting journalists must face consequences.
