Georgia: Journalist Eliso Janashia Attacked by Ruling Party Supporter
December 24, 2024 - Georgia, Poti
On December 24, 2024, Eliso Janashia, a journalist and founder of the social enterprise "Limeni," was physically attacked by Nineli Kulonava, a supporter of the ruling Georgian Dream party. The assault occurred near Janashia's office in Poti when Kulonava confronted her over the EU funding of the enterprise, criticizing the display of the EU flag. Kulonava allegedly insulted those present, accusing them of promoting "depravity."
As Janashia filmed the interaction, Kulonava attacked her, grabbing her by the hair and injuring her scalp. Janashia required emergency medical treatment.
The police were called, but Kulonava falsely claimed that Janashia initiated the attack. Janashia denied knowing her attacker and stated that Kulonava was a known Georgian Dream supporter.
Women Press Freedom condemns the assault on Janashia, which is part of a broader pattern of violence against journalists, activists, and protesters by the Georgian Dream party. We continue to denounce the lack of accountability for such incidents, which fosters a culture of impunity and threatens the safety of journalists in Georgia. Authorities must take action, investigate the incident, and hold those responsible accountable.
