Colombia: Senator’s Rhetoric Incites Online Harassment Against Journalist Diana Giraldo

January 09, 2025 - Colombia

Journalist Diana Saray Giraldo is being harassed online after Sen. Sandra Ramírez of the Comunes party publicly accused her of “profiling” for sharing a post about her participation in the World Antifascist Festival in Venezuela.

Ramírez even suggested she would hold the journalist responsible for any harm she might face. This reckless rhetoric has fueled a wave of misogynistic and attacks against Giraldo on social media.

Public officials must not incite hostility against journalists. Targeting the press in this way fosters censorship and silences critical reporting.

Women Press Freedom urges Ramírez to retract her harmful comments about Giraldo and publicly condemn the online attacks against her.
