Burundi: WPF Condemns 12-Year Sentence Sought for Sandra Muhoza on Baseless Charges

November 12, 2024 - Burundi, Bujumbura

Jailed journalist Sandra Muhoza faces a 12-year prison sentence for sharing information in private WhatsApp group of media professionals about alleged government-led arms distribution.

Detained since April, she’s charged with “undermining national integrity” (10 years) and “ethnic aversion” (2 years). These severe charges—sought by the Mukaza high court in Bujumbura—are unjust and wildly disproportionate. They appear politically motivated, especially considering Muhoza was merely sharing information in a closed WhatsApp group.

Women Press Freedom condemns these baseless charges and calls for Muhoza's acquittal and immediate release.
