Bulgaria: Elected Official Threatens Venelina Popova for Reporting on Potential Electoral Fraud

November 7, 2024 - Bulgaria, Sofia

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the recent threats made against journalist Venelina Popova by Mayor Nikolay Tonev of Galabovo. These threats are a direct response to Popova's investigative reporting, which critically highlights potential electoral fraud and other abuses of power. The threats she has received not only target her personally but also aim to silence the vital work of all journalists who strive to inform the public and uphold transparency in governance.

We stand in solidarity with Venelina Popova and all journalists facing harassment and intimidation for their work. It is imperative that authorities take immediate action to ensure her safety and the safety of all journalists in Bulgaria. We call upon the leadership of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms and other political entities to denounce such behavior and reaffirm their commitment to protecting press freedom, as well as the rights of women in media.

Women Press Freedom calls for a comprehensive investigation into these threats and prompt accountability.
