Journalist Basma Mostafa released on a 2000 L.E bail approximately 100 $. The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the release and urges the Egyptian authorities to take further steps to liberate free press by releasing journalists and revoking barriers to free press.
Basma was arrested on October 3, 2020, from Luxor governorate upon her arrival to cover the murder of Ewes Al-Rawy at hands of a national security officer. Basma was abducted and spent 26 hours in enforced disappearance before she appeared in Cairo in the Supreme National Security and was interrogated concerning allegations of spreading false news and joining a terrorist group.
On October 6, 2020, the Public Prosecutor released Basma on a bail and she is now waiting for the procedures to end in order to go home for her family according to her lawyer Kareem Abdel-Rady.
The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the release of Basma Mostafa and urges the Egyptian authorities to abstain from targeting journalists and liberate free speech. We call upon the Egyptian public prosecutor to review the cases of Esraa Abdel-Fattah, Solafa Magdy, Sanaa Seif and all journalists and prisoners of conscience in Egypt.
