Saudi Arabia: CFWIJ Welcomes The Release Of Nassima Al-sadah And Samar Badawi From Saudi Prison.

CFWIJ is delighted by the release of Saudi women rights activists Nassima Al-Sadah and Samar Badawi from prison. Both women were freed on Sunday, June 27, after serving their prison sentence. They were detained in July 2018 on the suspicion of harming the Kingdom’s interests. There are few details available on the trials against both activists. CFWIJ welcomes the release of Nassima and Samar from prison. However, given the details of their detention, we condemn the authorities’ torture of the imprisoned activists. The activists should never have been apprehended in the first place.

Staff correspondent for independent news website “Tut.by” Katsiaryna Barysevich was finally released from prison after completing her sentence period on May 19. She was arrested in November 2020 on the accusations of violating medical confidentiality in one of her articles. Katsiaryna has written the factual details behind the murder of a man named, Raman Bandarenka in her article. Raman was beaten by the unidentified people in Mink and later died in the hospital emergency room.

United States: CFWIJ Welcomes Andrea Sahouri’s Acquittal

Andrea Sahouri was acquitted today after standing trial for covering a Black Lives Matter demonstration in May 2020. At the time of arrest, and during court proceedings Sahouri claimed that she was physically assaulted and arrested by the police, despite clarifying multiple times that she was a journalist. Sahouri’s release was much welcomed by the international community.

Journalist Saba Azarpeik was reportedly released on bail on February 8. She was arrested illegally by The Iranian Cyber Police (FATA) on February 7 for unclear reasons. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the release of Saba. However, we demand the Iranian regime to end intimidating journalists solely for doing their job.
