Guatemala: CFWIJ Congratulates Anastasia Mejia For Winning The 2021 International Press Freedom Award

Location: Guatemala
Date: June 22, 2021

Anastasia Mejia, a radio journalist from Joybaj, Guatemala, won the 2021 Press Freedom Award. The journalist was recognized for her relentless service in the field of journalism. Anastasia co-founded Xolabaj Radio, dedicated to news for the local community. In 2017, she also started Xolabaj TV, which broadcasts live and recorded content on the outlet's Facebook and YouTube accounts. Anastasia's channel aims to give a platform to women, especially Indigenous women, to share their life experiences and issues that impact their community. CFWIJ congratulates Anastasia for her well-deserving win.

The journalist was arrested by Guatemalan police in September 2020 for charges including sedition. The charges against Anastasia were related to her coverage of a demonstration held against the mayor of Joyabaj. The journalist was detained for five weeks before being released to house arrest. Since being confined to her house, her journalistic work has become exceptionally difficult.

CFWIJ congratulates the journalist for her professional contributions and highlights the challenges she has faced. This award is a powerful recognition of her service in the field of journalism. The award also acknowledges the increasing challenges that Guatemalan women face in pursuit of their journalistic coverage. The region’s precarious situation was worsened by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism is delighted by Anastasia’s impressive accomplishments. At the same time, we also condemn the persecution and harassment she has suffered at the hands of state authorities. We congratulate Anastasia Mejia and wish her luck and success in her future endeavours.

The CFWIJ strongly condemns the police brutality against journalists. We demand the immediate return of the press cards seized from the security forces. Policies to intimidate journalists should be abandoned, and journalism should be practiced under the criteria of freedom of the press.
