South Africa: CFWIJ Condemns The Public Harassment Against Ayesha Ismail
eNCA correspondent Ayesha Ismail endured public harassment along with her cameraman while reporting on an anti-racism protest in Cape Town. Reportedly, the incident took place on June 10 when supporters of the opposition party, South African Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), threatened the journalist. Amidst the chaos by violent supporters, the crew fled the scene to save themselves from attack. CFWIJ condemns the mass outrage against the journalist and her cameraman. We demand an immediate investigation into the matter by the law enforcement authorities.
Georgia: CFWIJ Condemns Vicious Attack Against Journalist Nini Elikashvili
TV Pirveli reporter Nini Elikashvili and cameraman Papuna Khachidze were verbally and physically assaulted. The TV crew was deliberately attacked at Tsalka Municipality in southern Georgia while covering the local protests. One person was arrested related to the assault. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns this horrific attack against journalists. We demand a thorough investigation and accountability for the perpetrators. Journalists must do their jobs freely and safely.
Colombia: CFWIJ Condemns Police Brutality Against Journalists Katy Sánchez And Alexandra Molina
Police viciously attacked Katy Sánchez and Alexandra Molina, reporters of Colombian independent RCN Radio, while they were covering anti-government protests in the capital, Bogota. Security forces impeded journalists from filming the protests and beat them. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns police brutality against journalists. We demand the Colombian authorities conduct a full investigation into the use of disproportionate force and to ensure the safety of journalists. Journalists must freely do their job.
United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Online Death Threats Against Camilla Tominey
Camilla Tominey, award-winning journalist and associate editor for The Telegraph, received online death threats via email to her website. The journalist shared a screenshot of the email that stated chilling threats to Camila and her children. Camilla primarily covers politics and the Royals for The Telegraph. She believes the death threat might have come from a fan of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. CFWIJ condemns the death threats directed at Camilla and her family. We hope cybersecurity authorities will investigate and apprehend the person responsible.
Liberia: CFWIJ Condemns The Threatening Messages Targeting Journalist Aryee Davis
Aryee Davis has endured life-threatening messages following two of her publications on Green Coast TV's online news platform. Assigned to the Liberian Legislature, Aryee reported academic fraud involving one of the members of the House of Representatives. Grand Gedeh county representative Alex Grant reportedly submitted fake credentials to the University of Liberia. Aryee covered the story and received vicious threats from supporters of the representative.

The first hearing against 35 people, including reporter Buse Söğütlü, was held in İstanbul. The journalist faces accusations for participating on March 8, International Women’s Day march in 2020. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) urges the authorities once again that journalism is not a crime. We demand Buse’s acquittal immediately.

Türkiye’de gazetecilere yönelik giderek artan polis şiddeti ve mevcut iktidarın uyguladığı politikalara karşı basın meslek örgütleri eş zamanlı protesto düzenledi. 15 örgütün ortak yaptığı açıklamada ‘Nefes alamıyoruz’ denildi. Turkey: Press Organisations And Journalists Called The Turkish Government “We Can’t Breathe”
Press organizations and journalists gathered to call the Turkish government to end police violence and intimidating policies against journalists across the country. In a joint statement journalists underlined the pressure they face and called it "We can't breathe". The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) joins this call. We demand the authorities provide an environment where journalists can freely do their jobs. Journalism is not a crime.
Saudi Arabia: CFWIJ Welcomes The Release Of Nassima Al-sadah And Samar Badawi From Saudi Prison.
CFWIJ is delighted by the release of Saudi women rights activists Nassima Al-Sadah and Samar Badawi from prison. Both women were freed on Sunday, June 27, after serving their prison sentence. They were detained in July 2018 on the suspicion of harming the Kingdom’s interests. There are few details available on the trials against both activists. CFWIJ welcomes the release of Nassima and Samar from prison. However, given the details of their detention, we condemn the authorities’ torture of the imprisoned activists. The activists should never have been apprehended in the first place.

Yeni Yaşam Gazetesi editörü Hatice Şahin’e “silahlı örgüt üyeliği” suçlamasıyla açılan davanın üçüncü duruşması bugün Diyarbakır’da görüldü. Mahkeme, gizli tanık ifadesinde adı geçen gazeteci Kibriye Evren’in yargılandığı davanın iddianame ve duruşma tutanaklarının Diyarbakır 5. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi’nden istenmesine karar vererek duruşmayı 11 Ekim’e erteledi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak haksız yere açılan davaların sürekli ertelenerek gazetecileri yıldırmaya çalışılmasını kınıyor. Gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını yineliyoruz. Türk yetkililerden Hatice Şahin’in derhal beraatına karar verilmesini talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: Legal Persecution Continues Against Journalist Hatice Şahin - The Journalist Must Be Acquitted From All Charges
The third hearing of the case against Yeni Yaşam Newspaper editor Hatice Şahin on the charge of being affiliated with an armed organisation was held in Diyarbakır today. The court adjourned the hearing yet again for the third time. The next hearing will be held on October 11. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the attempts to intimidate journalists by constantly adjourning the trials. We reiterate once again journalism is not a crime. We demand Hatice’s acquittal immediately.
Poland: CFWIJ Is Monitoring The Investigation Against Journalist Aleksandra Klich-Siewiorek
Prominent journalist and editor-in-chief of women’s magazine Wysokie Obcasy, Aleksandra Klich-Siewiorek, is under investigation in the public prosecutor’s office. The journalist is accused of violating religious sentiments in one of her published articles. The magazine is under fire for publishing a cartoon of the Virgin Mary wearing a lightning bolt face mask as a symbol of resistance and empowerment against the restrictions on reproductive rights in Poland. CFWIJ is observing the situation as it unfolds. We urge the authorities at the public prosecutor’s office in Poland to end the Aleksandra unjustifiably.
