United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Online Death Threats Against Camilla Tominey

Location: United Kingdom
Date: June 29, 2021

Camilla Tominey, award-winning journalist and associate editor for The Telegraph, received online death threats via email to her website. The journalist shared a screenshot of the email that stated chilling threats to Camila and her children. Camilla primarily covers politics and the Royals for The Telegraph. She believes the death threat might have come from a fan of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. CFWIJ condemns the death threats directed at Camilla and her family. We hope cybersecurity authorities will investigate and apprehend the person responsible.

Camilla shared a screenshot of the email that read, “You have three kids. They must not be breathing. They must die! We are watching you and yours. The nasty husband of yours can not watch them all the time you know. We know where to get you. We don't lie, we act. We love to (knives’ emojis) You will be a pleasure to kill.” The horrific message was posted under the title of Monster. The hashtag #CamillaTomineyIsALiar also trended on Twitter with threatening and insulting messages.

“We must call out online hate when we see it, which is why I am posting this death threat, sent to my website this morning in the name of #HarryandMeghan ‘fandom’,” Camila tweeted. She further said, “Never be cowed by these abject hypocrites. Fight for the right to disagree agreeably”. She also thanked Twitter for taking action and banning the accounts that posted the threats.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism highly condemns the death threats against Camilla and her family. We demand cybersecurity authorities investigate who is responsible for sending such malicious threats to the journalist. We hope Camilla can continue her work without further fear or intimidation.

The CFWIJ strongly condemns the police brutality against journalists. We demand the immediate return of the press cards seized from the security forces. Policies to intimidate journalists should be abandoned, and journalism should be practiced under the criteria of freedom of the press.
