Azerbaijan: CFWIJ Condemns That Abuse And Threats Faced By Three Women Journalists At The Hands Of The Police

Ulviyya Ali, Nargis Absalamova, and Elnare Gasimova were verbally abused and physically assaulted by the police despite identifying themselves as journalists. The journalists were attacked while covering a protest against the murder of 24-year-old Sevinj Maharramova. Maharramova was allegedly murdered by her husband leading to protests regarding the persecution of women in the country.

Turkey: Journalist Sarya Toprak's Was Obstructed From Reporting The Affectees Of Wildfire, By The Minister Of Environment. CFWIJ Condemns This Impediment By The Authorities.

BirGün Newspaper reporter Sarya Toprak was impeded by the ministry of Environment and Urbanization. The reporter was filming areas and citizens affected by the recent wildfire but was prevented from doing so by the minister. The journalist was then forcibly removed from the area by the police force. This directly impedes her ability to report.

İstanbul’da Suruç Katliam’ında hayatını kaybedenleri anmak için bir araya gelen kitleye polis müdahale etti. Düzenlenen anmayı takip eden en az sekiz kadın gazeteciye de biber gazı, kalkan ve plastik mermiyle şiddet uygulandı. Polis müdahalesi sırasında gazeteci Zeynep Kuray’ın ekipmanı zarar gördü. Fatoş Erdoğan ise atılan plastik mermi sonucu yaralandı. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak gazetecilere uygulanan polis şiddetini kınıyoruz. Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns Deliberate Police Brutality Against Women Journalists

Police attacked the gathering to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Suruç Massacre in Istanbul. At least eight female journalists were also deliberately targetted and beaten with force. Police attacked journalists with tear gas and rubber bullets. Some of the reporters' equipment was damaged. Meanwhile, Dokuz8News reporter Fatoş Erdoğan was injured as a result of the plastic bullet. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by the police brutality. We demand the Turkish state and security forces end their violence. Journalists must freely do their jobs.

Mildred Manrique, 800 Noticias’ journalist, affirmed that security forces attempted to search her house without having a prior notice or a search warrant. The journalist also included that the police officers were carrying long weapons. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns Venezuelan security officials for intimidating Mildred. We demand clarification into this deliberate threat against the journalist.

Free press is facing extreme challenges in the country. Several women journalists are facing persecution in the form of unjustified detention, arrest and raids at apartments. Tatiana Smotkina, Anastasia Zanko and Alesia Latsinskaya are a few of those affected journalists. It's become a pattern in the country to target critical voices. CFWIJ condemns this ongoing practice against freedom of the press as the state is becoming extremely regressive towards free media and press. We also urge Belarusian authorities to stop abusing their power and let the journalists do their job fearlessly.
