Morning show host and columnist Shiffa Yousafzai was subjected to targeted personal attacks online. Political commentator and YouTuber Asad Ali Toor recently insinuated in his vlogs that Shiffa gets her job done because of her public relations with certain institutions and ministers. Asad mocked the journalist, saying if a monkey can dance well, that does not mean he should be given a screen. While judging Shiffa’s journalistic caliber, Asad crossed the line and attacked her personally.

Women journalists in Pakistan initiated a campaign the night of March 11, 2021, to defend the annual Aurat March, a protest rally that takes place on the International Women's Day in the country. The march came under threat after doctored videos and propaganda messages began circulating on social media, claiming that it was an anti-religious procession. The issue became worse when right-wing male journalists lent their support to this false narrative.

Pakistani cyberspace has become increasingly violent, especially towards women critical of the state in the past few years, and the authorities continue to blindside the issue despite such actions being illegal.
Pakistan: CFWIJ Condemns The Constant Intimidation From Government Spokesperson Towards Women Journalists
Dr Shahbaz Gill is a government spokesperson who frequently intimidates journalists online. He discriminates against women journalists and berates their work. Recently he shared the address of a female politician Palwasha Khan on Twitter. After that Palwasha’s house was attacked and she received threats. When the journalist, Benazir Shah pointed out the spokesperson for his mistake, he started intimidating her. He went on to bully her as a liar and enemy to him. Mr. Shahbaz Gill routinely attacks journalists and thus starts a trend of online trolling against them. CFWIJ condemns this intimidation and bullying of female journalists from a government official. We urge the Government authorities to step in and hold Mr. Shahbaz accountable for his misconduct.
Pakistan: CFWIJ Condemns The Verbal Harassment Against Ailia Zehra
Journalist and managing editor for “NayaDaur Media'', Ailia Zahra endured misogynistic and sexist remarks from infamous Pakistani writer Khalil ur Rehman Qamar. Alia was invited as a panelist in a T.V. show on Saturday, February 20. During the discussion, Mr. Khalil ur Rehman started yelling at the journalist. When he was countered for his tone, the writer put down his mike and left the live show. Reportedly he also labeled Ailia, a RAW agent while leaving the premises. The incident was followed by a vicious online campaign with threats and abuse against the journalist. CFWIJ condemns the writer’s sick behaviour and urges press regulation bodies in the country to take substantial steps to bar him from T.V appearances.
Pakistan: CFWIJ Condemns The Rape And Death Threats Against Zebunnisa Burki
Zebunnisa Burki, a deputy editor for The News, endured vicious rape and death threats on Sunday, February 14. A rider associated with a local parcel delivery service abused the journalist, threatening to rape and kill her along with her family. Zebunnisa reached out to the vehicle service via chat to report his behavior. The journalist only received a response after tweeting about the incident. It is reported that the delivery service has fired the employee involved in the alarming misconduct.

Journalist and human rights defender Sanna Ejaz was briefly arrested and later released during the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) protest on January 6. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns this vicious attack against Sana by law enforcement officials. We demand Pakistani authorities end their intimidation of journalists and respect press freedom.

Ailia Zehra, journalist and managing editor of the Naya Daur Media, was targeted with an online smear campaign initiated by the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its followers. The campaign followed the airing of the interview of former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar with the BBC News and Naya Dour. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) believes these deliberate attacks are aimed to intimidate Ailia for her coverage. We call on the authorities to end their vicious attempts to intimidate the press. Journalists should be able to do their jobs in a free and fair environment. We reiterate that targeting and threatening members of the press is unacceptable.
