California: CFWIJ Saddened By The Passing Of Science Journalist Sharon Begley
Renowned science journalist Sharon Begley passed away at the age of 64. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condoles the loss of an influential figure to the world of health and science reporting. According to STAT News, where Sharon was a senior writer, she was battling cancer.
India: CFWIJ Demands An Immediate Investigation About The Phishing Scam Journalist Nidhi Razdan Faced
Award-winning journalist Nidhi Razdan was exposed to a teaching position by an institution posing as Harvard University. Nidhi said on January 15 that she was the victim of an elaborate phishing scam after a job offered for teaching at Harvard University. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is appalled by the deceitful targeting of Nidhi. We demand authorities to investigate and identify the culprits immediately.
Philippines: CFWIJ Condemns The Third Cyber Libel Charge Against Maria Ressa
Rappler founder Maria Ressa faces the third charge of cyber libel. According to her lawyer Ted Te, the third cyber libel complaint came after the story aired in October 2020 about De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Manila students paid P20,000 to pass their thesis. The complaint was filed by Benilde’s lecturer Ariel Pineda who was at the top of the scene. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns all charges against Maria and reiterates the Duterte regime once again that journalism is not a crime.

Kıbrıslı gazeteci ve Sınır Tanımayan Gazeteciler (RSF) muhabiri Esra Aygın, sosyal medya hesabında Kuzey Kıbrıs Cumhurbaşkanı Ersin Tatar'ı eleştirdiği için çevrimiçi karalama kampanyalarının hedefi oldu. Gazeteci Aygın, ölüm tehditleri aldığını açıkladı. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak Aygın’a karşı gerçekleşen bu saldırıları kınıyor, Kıbrıslı yetkililerden gazetecilerin fikir ve ifade özgürlüklerine saygı duymalarını ve ölüm tehditleri savuran şüpheliler hakkında yasal işlem başlatmalarını talep ediyoruz.
Northern Cyprus: CFWIJ Condemns Hate Speech Against Journalist Esra Aygin
Cypriot journalist and correspondent of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Esra Aygın became the target of online smear campaigns for criticizing the President of Northern Cyprus Ersin Tatar on her social media account. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns these deliberate attacks against Aygın and demands the Cypriot authorities to respect freedom of expression. We urge authorities to take legal action against suspects who issue death threats against the journalist.
Slovakia: CFWIJ Demands An Immediate Investigation Into The Surveillance Of Journalist Monika Tódová
Journalist Monika Tódová in Denník N newspaper was monitored and photographed by two unidentified individuals for at least two days in early January. Surveillance with his family of journalists in a country house in the High Tatra Mountains in northern Slovakia is thought to be linked to the 2018 murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is deeply concerned about Monika’s and her family’s safety. We demand authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the surveillance of the journalist.
Belarus: CFWIJ Denounces The Harassment Of Journalist Tatsiana Bublikawa By The Police
Journalist Tatsiana Bublikawa, of independent news agency BelaPan in Belarus, was mistreated by the police during a raid at her office. The search was conducted in relation to an ongoing investigation into a former employee, Andrei Alexandrov. As a result, Tatsiana suffered from panic and high blood pressure and was later admitted to the hospital. The Coalition for Women in Journalism denounces this deplorable behavior towards journalists in Belarus.

Bir süredir kanser tedavisi gören gazeteci Sevim Gözay, 48 yaşında hayatını kaybetti. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak Türkiye’deki sinema programlarının aranılan yüzü, kültür ve sanat yazılarının mimarı gazeteci Gözay’ı kaybetmenin üzüntüsü içerisindeyiz. Journalist Sevim Gözay, who was fighting for cancer for a while, died at the age of 48. The Coalition For Women In Journalism mourns the loss of Sevim. She will be always remembered for her dedication and contributions to Turkey’s arts and culture news. We share our deepest condolences to Sevim’s family, friends and loved ones.

Gazeteci Ruken Demir'in haber kaynaklarıyla yaptığı görüşmeler nedeniyle “örgüt üyeliği” suçlamasıyla yargılandığı davanın dördüncü duruşması, mahkemenin dijital materyallerin incelenmesi kararını vermesi sonucu dava ertelendi. Bir sonraki duruşma 23 Şubat’ta görülecek. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak bir kez daha gazeteciliğin suç olmadığını yetkililere hatırlatmak istiyoruz. Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Journalist Ruken Demir’s Immediate Acquittal
The fourth hearing of the trial against journalist Ruken Demir was held yesterday in İzmir. The journalist was charged with being affiliated with an illegal organization due to her interviews. The court adjourned the trial after requesting to examine the digital materials. The next hearing will be held on 23 February. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) reiterates the authorities once again that journalism is not a crime. We demand Ruken Demir’s immediate acquittal.

Gazeteci Melis Alphan'a, 2015 Diyarbakır’da düzenlenen Newroz etkinliğinden sosyal medyada paylaştığı fotoğraf nedeniyle "terör örgütü propagandası yapmak" suçlamasıyla yedi buçuk yıla kadar hapis istemiyle dava açıldı. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak Alphan hakkında haksız yere açılan bu davayı kınıyoruz. Yetkililerden gazetecileri susturmaya yönelik bu girişimlere son vermesini talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Journalist Melis Alphan's Immediate Acquittal
Journalist Melis Alphan was charged with spreading terrorist propaganda for the photo she shared on social media during the Newroz (Spring Festival) held in Diyarbakır in 2015. The journalist faces up to seven years sentence in prison. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the unjust case against the journalist. We demand Turkey to end these attempts to silence journalists.

Mezopotamya Ajansı (MA) editörü Dicle Müftüoğlu’na sosyal medya paylaşımları gerekçe gösterilerek, "örgüt propagandası yapmak" iddiasıyla soruşturma başlatıldı. Gazeteci daha önce de hakkında açılan davanın henüz ilk duruşmasında bir yıl üç ay hapis cezasına çarptırılmıştı. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak açılan soruşturmayı kınıyor, hakkında takipsizlik kararı talep ediyoruz. Gazetecilik suç değildir.
Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Authorities To End Legal Harassment Against Journalists
An investigation was launched against Dicle Müftüoğlu, editor of the Mesopotamia Agency (MA), with the allegation of spreading propaganda for an organization of her social media posts. The journalist was previously sentenced to 15 months in prison at the first hearing of the case against her. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the legal harassment against Dicle. We demand the dismissal of the investigation towards the journalist. Journalism is not a crime.
