Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns Three Reporters’ Detention While They Were Covering Women's Protest
Jinnews reporters Habibe Eren, Öznur Değer and journalist Eylül Deniz Yaşar were detained while following the women demonstration in Ankara. Three journalists were released after their testimony was taken. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the violence and police intervention against journalists. Reporters are obliged to cover the developments in the country. Journalists cannot be detained solely for following the news.
Türkiye: CFWIJ Gazeteci Zeynep Durgut’un Derhal Serbest Bırakılmasını Talep Ediyor
Mezopotamya Ajansı (MA) ve Jin News muhabirleri Zeynep Durgut, Rojda Aydın ve Derya Ren, haber takibinin ardından Şırnak’ın Cizre ilçesinde gözaltına alındı. Polisin yaptığı Genel Bilgi Taraması’nın (GBT) ardından Rojda Aydın ve Derya Ren serbest bırakıldı ancak Zeynep Durgut Şırnak İl Emniyet Müdürlüğü’ne götürüldü. Yalnız bu yıl kaydettiğimiz saldırılar arasında dünyanın dört bir yanından yüz kadın kadın gazetecinin gözaltına alındığını belgeledik. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak gazetecileri susturmak amacıyla yapılan bu girişimleri kınıyoruz. Durgut’un derhal serbest bırakılmasını talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Immediate Release Of Journalist Zeynep Durgut
Reporters from the Mesopotamia Agency (MA) and Jin News, Zeynep Durgut, Rojda Aydın and Derya Ren, were detained in Şırnak. Journalists Rojda Aydın and Derya Ren were released after the General Information Scan (GBT) conducted by the police, but Zeynep Durgut was taken to the Şırnak Police Station, where she remains in police custody. These incidents mark one hundred detentions of women journalists that we have documented this year alone. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns these deliberate attempts to silence journalists. We demand the immediate release of Zeynep and an end to the state’s intimidation of journalists.

The demonstration was in protest of the restrictive abortion law, calling for the resignation of Minister of Education, Przemysław Czarnek. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) observes with great concern an evident surge in police violence used against the participants and the press in Poland. Agata Grzybowska was detained, forced into a police van and taken to a police station, despite showing her press card to the officers. CFWIJ is alarmed by the disrespectful and aggressive behavior towards the journalist and urges the authorities to ensure that press freedom in Poland is respected.

Russia: Journalist Yana Toporkova Was Detained, Her Home Raided And Equipment Confiscated.
Journalist Yana Toporkova was detained as a part of an investigation into the spreading of "false information". The police also raided the journalist’s house and confiscated her equipment. The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands Russian authorities to return the confiscated equipment to journalist Yana Toporkova immediately.

Belarus: At Least Nine Journalists Were Detained While Reporting The Civil Unrest Across The Country
After the controversial elections won by President Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus, tens of thousands of people continue to flood the streets despite harsh police measures. Thousands gathered on Sunday during the 90th consecutive day of demonstrations, demanding the resignation of the nation’s president. During the protests, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) confirmed that at least nine journalists were arrested. The Coalition For Women In Journalism denounces these arrests and demands the release of all detainees.

Israel: Journalist Bushra Al-Tawil Arbitrarily Detained For The Fifth Time By Israeli Authorities.
Israeli authorities arrested journalist Bushra Al-Tawil yesterday while she was passing through a bridge checkpoint. Without legal grounds, the journalist was apprehended and moved to an undisclosed location. This is the fifth time Bushra has been detained by Israeli authorities. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is dismayed by the constant targeting of women journalists by Israeli authorities.

Israel: Journalist Christine Renawy Interrogated Over Allegations Of Defying Interior Security Minister’s Memo.
Journalist Christine Renawy of Palestine Television briefly detained and interrogated by Israeli authorities over allegations of breaching the Interior Security minister’s memo that prohibits her from working in the occupied territories and shut down Palestine TV office. The Coalition For Women In Journalism welcomes the release and calls upon the Israeli authorities to stop targeting and intimidating journalists in the occupied territories.
Greece: German Documentary Journalists Arbitrarily Detained In Samos Island
On 19 October 2020, a German media crew making a documentary about climate-induced migration on the Greek island of Samos were detained for seven hours, strip searched and held in jail without charges over their use of a filming drone.
