China: Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan Faces Up To Five Years In Prison For Reporting Covid-19 Outbreak In China
Zhang Zhan, a Chinese citizen journalist based in Shanghai, was first detained in May for reporting on the Covid-19 outbreak from Wuhan. After being arrested in June, the journalist faces up to five years in jail for allegedly spreading false information. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is deeply concerned for Zhang Zhan’s safety and demands she be released immediately. No journalist should be subjected to such mistreatment, especially when informing the public about a deadly epidemic spreading across the country.
Russia: Journalist Yana Toporkova Was Detained, Her Home Raided And Equipment Confiscated.
Journalist Yana Toporkova was detained as a part of an investigation into the spreading of "false information". The police also raided the journalist’s house and confiscated her equipment. The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands Russian authorities to return the confiscated equipment to journalist Yana Toporkova immediately.
Turkey: First Hearing Of The Case Against Canan Kaya, Editor-In-Chief For Medya Koridoru, Was Postponed To Next Year
Demirören Media Group filed a lawsuit against Canan Kaya, the editor-in-chief for online news website Medya Koridoru, and five other media companies, TELE1 TV, İleri Haber, Ajans Press, Aykırı and Medya Koridoru. The media outlets were targeted after airing a story on a female employee that was forced to resign after failing to take her shoes off on a management floor. The first hearing of the case was held yesterday at İstanbul Bakırköy 6th Civil Court of First Instance. However, the court postponed the trial to February 2, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism denounces the charges against Canan and the media companies and demands Demirören Media Group to withdraw.

“Demirören Medya'da büyük skandal! Kadın çalışan, yönetim katından ayakkabılarıyla geçtiği için istifaya zorlandı!” başlıklı haberinin ardından Demirören Medya Grubu, Medya Koridoru Genel Yayın Yönetmeni Canan Kaya ve TELE1 TV, İleri Haber, Ajans Press, Aykırı Haber ve Medya Koridoru aleyhine tazminat davası açtı. Davanın ilk duruşması dün İstanbul Bakırköy 6. Asliye Hukuk Mahkemesi'nde görüldü. Dava 2 Şubat 2021 tarihine erteledi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak Kaya’ya ve medya kuruluşlarına açılan tazminat davasını kınıyoruz. Demirören Medya Grubu'nun davayı geri çekmesini talep ediyoruz.

Poland: Journalist Renata Kim Attacked While Covering Independence Day March
Journalist of the Polish edition of Newsweek, Renata Kim, was attacked by police officers while covering a march commemorating Polish Independence Day in the capital city. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns such despicable acts of violence against the press and calls upon the authorities to establish consequences for this unacceptable behaviour.

Turkey: Journalist Canan Coşkun's Trial Postponed To The Next Year.
The third hearing of the trial against journalists Canan Coşkun, Ali Açar and Cansever Uğur was held at Istanbul’s 34th High Criminal Court on charges of "targeting the counter-terrorism officer to terrorist organizations". The trial was postponed to February 23, 2021, due to the lawyers needing to complete their defence. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the legal harassment of journalists who are bringing public issues to light and demands their acquittal.
Hong Kong: Journalist Bao Choy’s Trial Postponed To January 14, 2021.
Investigative journalist and reporter Bao Choy stands trial over charges of making false statements when seeking access to data. The trial was adjourned until January 14, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is alarmed by these constant infringements of press freedom and calls for a retraction of these accusations.
Belarus: At Least Nine Journalists Were Detained While Reporting The Civil Unrest Across The Country
After the controversial elections won by President Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus, tens of thousands of people continue to flood the streets despite harsh police measures. Thousands gathered on Sunday during the 90th consecutive day of demonstrations, demanding the resignation of the nation’s president. During the protests, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) confirmed that at least nine journalists were arrested. The Coalition For Women In Journalism denounces these arrests and demands the release of all detainees.
