Turkey: The 2020 Sedat Simavi Literature Award Was Given To Two Women Journalists And Two Women Radio Presenters
The Coalition For Women In Journalism is thrilled that the Sedat Simavi Literature Award, organized by the Turkish Journalists' Association each year, was awarded to two women journalists and two women radio presenters. Journalists Hazal Ocak and Beril Ötkan, and Radio program producers Çiğdem Işık and Sevilay Tunalı are among the award winners of 2020.

Berat Albayrak'a ait olduğu iddia edilen e-postaları haberleştiren, aralarında Derya Okatan’ın da bulunduğu altı gazetecinin yargılandığı davanın 10. duruşması İstanbul 29. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi’nde görüldü. Gazetecilerin taleplerini reddeden mahkeme heyeti duruşmayı 5 Mayıs 2021'e erteledi. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak yıllardır haksız şekilde süren bu davada gazetecilerin beraatini talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: CFWIJ Demands The Acquittal Of Derya Okatan And The Five Other Journalists In The Redhack Trial
The 10th hearing of the case in which six journalists, including Derya Okatan, were tried at Istanbul 29th High Criminal Court. The journalists are on trial for their coverage of emails allegedly belonging to former minister Berat Albayrak. The court rejected all of the journalists’ requests and adjourned the next hearing to May 5, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands the charges be dropped and the journalists acquitted.

Cumhuriyet gazetesi muhabiri Hazal Ocak, sorumlu yazı işleri müdürü Olcay Büyüktaş, yazı işleri müdürü İpek Özbey ve foto-muhabiri Vedat Arık hakkında Nisan 2020’de gazetede yayımlanan haber gerekçe gösterilerek açılan davanın ilk duruşması bugün İstanbul 26. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesinde görüldü. Gazeteciler beş ila 14 yıla kadar hapis cezası istemiyle yargılanıyor. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu olarak gazetecilere yönelik açılan bu davayı kınıyor, haklarında derhal beraat kararı verilmesini talep ediyoruz.
Turkey: CFWIJ Demands The Immediate Withdrawal Of The Case Against Cumhuriyet Newspaper Correspondents
The first hearing of the trial against Cumhuriyet newspaper reporter Hazal Ocak, editor Olcay Büyüktaş, editor-in-chief İpek Özbey and photojournalist Vedat Arık, was held today. The journalists are facing a sentence between five to fourteen years in prison for charges related to a news article published in April 2020. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is dismayed by the lawsuit against the journalists, and we demand their immediate acquittal.

Turkey: Al-Monitor’s Journalist Amberin Zaman Targeted With An Online Smear Campaign
Al-Monitor journalist Amberin Zaman, along with her colleague Dan Wilkofsky, was targeted with an online smear campaign after covering a story about recruiting young Syrian Kurds into armed organizations. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the lynching attempts against the journalist. CFWIJ stands with Amberin and commends her commitment to her work. We call on the authorities to identify the attackers as we reiterate that such vicious attacks can carry severe consequences.
Cuba: Journalist Luz Escobar Continuously Impeded From Leaving Her Home
Luz Escobar, a Cuban journalist working for the independent news website 14yMedio, has been repeatedly banned from leaving her house by security agents. Such unacceptable behaviour not only impedes her work but also interferes with her daily life. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed with the way journalists are regularly mistreated in Cuba. We call on the Cuban law enforcement to cease their unjustified actions that clearly violate human rights.
Estonia: Two Years, No Verdict — The Trial Against Eesti Rahvusringhääling And Journalist Anna Pihl Continues
Nearly two years have passed since the beginning of the trial against Estonian newsroom Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR) and two of its journalists, including Anna Pihl. The proceedings remain ongoing, with no end in sight. Throughout the trial, the news covered by the journalists has been restricted from public access. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns this attempt to silence the journalists, demanding the case be dropped and their coverage released.

Gazeteci Nurcan Yalçın hakkında Rosa Kadın Derneği’ne yönelik başlatılan soruşturma kapsamında “örgüt üyeliği” ve “örgüt propagandası yapmak” suçlamasıyla açılan davanın ilk duruşması Diyarbakır 9. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi’nde görüldü. Mahkeme, bir sonraki duruşmada gizli tanıkların dinlenmesine ve dosyadaki eksik hususların giderilmesine karar verdi. İkinci duruşma 3 Mart 2021 tarihinde görülecek. Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns The Trial Against Journalist Nurcan Yalçin And Demands Her Acquittal
The first hearing of the case against journalist Nurcan Yalçın was held at the Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court. The journalist faces charges of being affiliated with a terrorist organization and spreading propaganda of a terrorist group. The charges fall within the scope of the investigation launched against the Rosa Women's Association. The court decided to hear the secret witnesses at the next hearing and requested to retrieve the missing points in the case file. The second hearing will be held on March 3, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the lawsuit filed against Nurcan and demands the journalist's acquittal.

Coming to the end of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) raises its deepest concern for the neglect of women journalists’ fundamental rights and freedoms around the world. On Human Rights Day, we call for a revision of policies to better protect the safety and well-being of women journalists.

Afghanistan: Journalist And Enikas TV Anchor Malalai Maiwand Killed By Islamic State
Malalai Maiwand, an anchor on Enikas Radio and TV in Afghanistan, was killed on Human Rights Day along with her driver, Mohammad Tahir, when the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle in Jalalabad, Nangarhar province. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns this horrific attack against Malalai and demands an immediate investigation into her murder. The brutal killing of the journalist and human rights advocate is a harrowing example of the crackdown on press freedom in Afghanistan.
