Turkey: CFWIJ Demands The Acquittal Of Derya Okatan And The Five Other Journalists In The Redhack Trial

The 10th hearing of the case in which six journalists, including Derya Okatan, were tried at Istanbul 29th High Criminal Court. The journalists are on trial for their coverage of emails allegedly belonging to former minister Berat Albayrak. The court rejected all of the journalists’ requests and adjourned the next hearing to May 5, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands the charges be dropped and the journalists acquitted.

The first hearing of the trial against Cumhuriyet newspaper reporter Hazal Ocak, editor Olcay Büyüktaş, editor-in-chief İpek Özbey and photojournalist Vedat Arık, was held today. The journalists are facing a sentence between five to fourteen years in prison for charges related to a news article published in April 2020. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is dismayed by the lawsuit against the journalists, and we demand their immediate acquittal.

Luz Escobar, a Cuban journalist working for the independent news website 14yMedio, has been repeatedly banned from leaving her house by security agents. Such unacceptable behaviour not only impedes her work but also interferes with her daily life. Gazeteci Nurcan Yalçın hakkında Rosa Kadın Derneği’ne yönelik başlatılan soruşturma kapsamında “örgüt üyeliği” ve “örgüt propagandası yapmak” suçlamasıyla açılan davanın ilk duruşması Diyarbakır 9. Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi’nde görüldü. Mahkeme, bir sonraki duruşmada gizli tanıkların dinlenmesine ve dosyadaki eksik hususların giderilmesine karar verdi. İkinci duruşma 3 Mart 2021 tarihinde görülecek. Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns The Trial Against Journalist Nurcan Yalçin And Demands Her Acquittal

The first hearing of the case against journalist Nurcan Yalçın was held at the Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court. The journalist faces charges of being affiliated with a terrorist organization and spreading propaganda of a terrorist group. The charges fall within the scope of the investigation launched against the Rosa Women's Association. The court decided to hear the secret witnesses at the next hearing and requested to retrieve the missing points in the case file. The second hearing will be held on March 3, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the lawsuit filed against Nurcan and demands the journalist's acquittal.
