The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) appreciates Peoples’ Houses for the value they show to the women journalists. We congratulate the journalists who chase the truth.
"Peoples’ Rights Press, Art and Solidarity Awards" found their owners for the ninth time this year on the 89th anniversary of the Peoples’ Houses. Nine female journalists were awarded press awards for their brave stories. The awards ceremony was held online due to the pandemic.
The journalists who received the award are as follows; Eylem Nazlıer (Evrensel Newspaper), Demet Aran (Anayurt Newspaper), arrested journalists Şehriban Abi (Mesopotamia Agency) and Nazan Sala, Burcu Karakaş (Deutsche Welle), Nazlı Yerebasmaz (FOX News), Gül Gündüz (Halk TV), Dilek Dindar ( Artı TV) and Özge Erdoğan (Can TV)
Evrensel Newspaper's İstanbul reporter Eylem Nazlıer received an award with the news that brought up the difficulties experienced by children with autism who had to stay at home under pandemic conditions.
Anayurt Newspaper reporter Demet Aran was deemed worthy of an award for the news that the Health and Safety Labour Watch (ISIG) wrote the press statement of workers who died because of coronavirus. Last year, Demet was subjected to police violence while reporting and filming the press statement for the Health and Safety Labour Watch. On October 14, 2020, Demet Aran was attacked by security forces. The journalist was prevented by the police while filming the press briefing. The police attempted to detain the journalist and her phone was confiscated. She delivered her mobile from the security branch and underlined that she plans to file a criminal complaint against the police who intervened.
Imprisoned journalists Şehriban Abi and Nazan Sala were also among the journalists who received the press award. Journalists deemed eligible for the press because they reported on Kurdish villagers named Servet Turgut and Osman Siban getting tortured and thrown off from a national army helicopter. One of the victims of the torture, Servet Turgut, died from his injuries on September 30. Both journalists remain behind bars for 136 days.
Deutsche Welle reporter Burcu Karakaş was awarded for revealing the challenges refugee and disabled children face in pandemic conditions.
FOX News reporter Nazlı Yerebasmaz was awarded for the news of hundreds of children confronting the inequalities in education in difficult weather conditions. Gül Gündüz from Halk TV was awarded for bringing up the queues at public bread dealers. Can TV's 'Bu Sabah' presenter and Artı TV reporter Dilek Dindar raised the problems of workers at every opportunity with their TV programmes.
The Coalition For Women In Journalism wholeheartedly congratulates nine journalists who chased the truth. Women’s involvement in the industry is essential to build democratic countries where freedom of speech is respected.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism closely monitors the incidents in Turkey with great concern. Since March 8, Women's Day, police violence against women journalists increasingly continues in the country. As the coalition, we urge the Turkish state to provide a free environment for journalists. Following the news is our most fundamental democratic right to report. We demand the immediate release of our detained colleagues. Journalism is not a crime. Journalism cannot be prevented.
