"What I endure every time I work. I'm fed up, and don't tell me 'don't care' because those who haven't experienced it can't comprehend. It's truly disheartening when you put your voice, your energy, your all into your work, only to face constant criticism," says sports reporter Lola Del Carril, known for her work at ESPN. The reporter has been subjected to a vicious online harassment campaign for her work.

"I swear it distresses me greatly to dedicate four hours of my time, only to receive negativity," she says, highlighting the emotional toll of the constant negativity she faces while engaging in her work.

Critiquing what she described as a "shitty, outdated, and sexist society," Del Carril expressed her frustration and hinted at the possibility of giving up her endeavors. "Go to work and let it be. They're going to make me stop doing it (…) I swear it hurts a lot," she says.

Sexism and online bullying directed at women sports journalists have become pervasive issues within the industry, as documented by Women Press Freedom. Women sports journalists often face discriminatory treatment, including being targeted with derogatory comments, threats, and harassment solely based on their gender.

The toxic online environment exacerbates these challenges, as social media platforms can be breeding grounds for targeted attacks and cyberbullying against women in sports media. Such behavior undermines the professionalism and credibility of these journalists, creates barriers to their success, and contributes to a hostile work environment.

Women Press Freedom stands firmly in support of Lola del Carril, condemning the online harassment she has faced while fulfilling her journalistic duties. Addressing sexism and online bullying targeting women sports journalists is vital for creating a more inclusive and fair sports media environment. The transition from online attacks to real-world threats endangers journalists' safety significantly. It is imperative for responsible social media platforms to take action and for authorities to protect journalists and uphold media freedom both online and offline. Accountability for those responsible for these attacks is paramount.
