Canada: Two More Women Journalists of Color Targeted as Deeply Racist, Organised Hate Campaign Escalates
The widespread hate campaign against journalists of color escalated on Monday with two more women journalists receiving threatening and abusive emails. At least 17 journalists were targeted after right-wing politician Maxime Bernier tweeted a provocative message inciting his supporters. Freelance sports journalist Shireen Ahmed and CBC host Angela Sterritt were the latest targets of the ongoing hate campaign, weaponized racist and misogynistic language to threaten, intimidate and silence journalists of color. Maxime’s tweet has since been deleted but the organised campaign against journalists has continued unabated, with many of the vile emails sent from the same email account.

He even went so far as to publish the email addresses of some of the journalists online, making them vulnerable to online abuse. Although later taken down by Twitter, the journalists faced hostile digital attacks as a result of his tweets.

Journalist Virginia Suárez was threatened with death by an unknown commentator during her live broadcast. Virginia filed a criminal complaint with the Los Ríos Prosecutor's Office for the crime of intimidation against her. We demand Ecuadorian authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the threats and ensure Virginia’s safety.

Journalist and columnist Juliana Dal Piva was threatened by President Jair Bolsonaro’s lawyer Frederick Wassef after a podcast was aired in which the president's corruption was exposed. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the threats against the journalist. We demand Brazilian authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the threat messages and ensure journalist’s safety.
Panama: CFWIJ Demands Swift Investigation Into The Death Threats Journalist Flor Mizrachi Faces
La Prensa reporter and ECO TV presenter Flor Mizrachi faced death threats following her news coverage about corruption in Panama’s COVID-19 vaccination process. The journalist received phone calls after publishing her two reports of irregular vaccination. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by the vicious threats Flor faced. We call Panamanian authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the incident and identify the suspects. We demand security officials to ensure the safety of journalist’s safety.
France: CFWIJ Horrified At The Death Threats Towards Journalist Maty Fall
Journalist Maty Fall, who is originally from Senegal, was sent death threats online while she was covering the event in her home country. The sheer volume of violence threats and abuses that she received caught the attention of local journalist unions and other civil society groups who have extended her support and condemned the campaign against her. Maty has since filed a complaint with the police.
Hungary: CFWIJ Demands A Swift Investigation Into The Threats Against Journalist Sarolta Gálfi
A letter containing a suspicious powder was sent to Sarolta Gálfi, the editor-in-chief of the city newspaper in Szentendre, Hungary. A threatening letter had also been sent to the journalist by an unidentified individual a week before the incident. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is devastated by the death threats the journalist faced. We demand Hungarian authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the vicious attack, identify the perpetrator and ensure Sarolta’s safety.
United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Repeated Threats Against Journalist Amy Fenton
Chief reporter for the Mail in Barrow, Amy Fenton was put under police protection after repeated threats targeting her and her daughter. Over the past few months Amy had received rape and death threats in person as well as online due to the nature of her work. The situation has continually gotten worse, raising serious concerns regarding her and her family's safety.
