Afghanistan: Hundreds Of Afghan Women Journalists Plead For Help As They Face Taliban Retribution
The threatened yet resilient Afghan women journalists shared stories of despair, fear, and silence as The Coalition For Women In Journalism was flooded by applications for assistance. With a tireless team effort and sincere commitment to our women journalists on the ground, we have managed to relocate more than 30 at-risk individuals so far. The bustling Afghan media that once thrived even amidst the worst of threats is now finding it hard to survive under Taliban rule.
Afghanistan: CFWIJ Is Concerned For Shabnam Dawran And Khadija Amin After The Taliban Denied Them Entry To Work
Shabnam Dawran, a broadcaster at state-run news channel Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA), was denied entry to work. In a video message Shabnam shared with the private news network, TOLO News, she alleged the Taliban barred her from entering the news station and told her to “go home”. Shabnam was dressed in a hijab and presented her work ID, but was not allowed into the Kabul-based network. Another female presenter, Khadija Amin, was instructed to go home and wait when she tried to return to work on August 18.
United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Online Death Threats Against Camilla Tominey
Camilla Tominey, award-winning journalist and associate editor for The Telegraph, received online death threats via email to her website. The journalist shared a screenshot of the email that stated chilling threats to Camila and her children. Camilla primarily covers politics and the Royals for The Telegraph. She believes the death threat might have come from a fan of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. CFWIJ condemns the death threats directed at Camilla and her family. We hope cybersecurity authorities will investigate and apprehend the person responsible.
Belarus: CFWIJ Is Dismayed As The Journalist Valyaryna Kustava Leaves The Country Amidst Threats
Valyaryna Kustava, a poet and an anchor for Belarusian television left the country along with her toddler daughter amidst the threats to her safety. The journalist was facing two criminal cases against her in the ongoing persecution against dissents and critical journalists.

Northern Cyprus: CFWIJ Condemns Threats Against Journalist Pinar Barut
Pınar Barut, editor-in-chief of Özgür Kıbrıs Newspaper, was threatened by the mafia boss Halil Falyalı, after the news published about drug smuggling. The newspaper also deliberately endured many cyber attacks. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the vicious death threats against journalists. We demand the Cypriot authorities to ensure the journalist’s safety.
Northern Ireland: CFWIJ Once Again Registers Its Concerns Over Growing Threats Against Patricia Devlin
Award-winning crime reporter Patricia Devlin was again threatened online. Patricia received a very horrific threat against her son via Facebook inbox. The threat mentioned to her son was written as "your baby will suffer very soon from rape very nice". The journalist shared a screenshot on Twitter on May 8 and said, “This is what happens when authorities fail to purpose and hold to account vile creatures using fake accounts to make threats.”
Northern Ireland: CFWIJ Registers Its Growing Concern Regarding The Threats To Patricia Devlin's Safety.
Patricia Devlin was again targeted on social media after her coverage of the actions of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF). This has become a regular occurence. Devlin, who is a crime reporter has faced similar threats in the past, any time she reported on the loyalist groups operating within Ireland. Over the past couple of years, Devlin was targeted with death and rape threats aimed towards herself and her family, and social media doxxing campaigns. Despite the several attempts to engage law enforcement agencies in the matter, Devlin remains vulnerable to such attacks.

As militants continue to target women journalists in the country to terrorize civilians, Neda Sadeq Oghlo emerges as a symbol of resistance. Despite the threats, Neda recently established her own radio channel. According to Neda, this is the time for civil society to actively work towards peace, and the media industry is one of the avenues she believes could make a difference. CFWIJ commends Neda’s courage and commitment to journalism.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Violence Against Women Journalists Covering Daunte Wright Unrest
Several journalists are covering the protests in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. The demonstrations were sparked by the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright, a 20-year old Black man, by a police officer. There are several reports of violence against the reporters by police and from enraged protestors. CFWIJ condemns the assault against working journalists. We demand that police stop interfering with reporters doing their job and hope that protestors also show some restraint towards the media.

The recent wave of violence against women journalists in Afghanistan has led several women to quit their jobs, fearing for their lives. The attacks escalated following the peace negotiations between the U.S. government and the Taliban leadership. The assaults and murders are widely believed to be carried out by extremist groups looking to derail the process. CFWIJ condemns the relentless attacks against women journalists and demands Afghan authorities to take action.

Journalist Dayanna Monroy was publicly denounced again by former president Abdalá Bucaram, who has expressed his desire to kill her. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is very concerned about the possible threat to the journalist’s life and demands the authorities ensure her safety.
United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Repeated Threats Against Journalist Amy Fenton
Chief reporter for the Mail in Barrow, Amy Fenton was put under police protection after repeated threats targeting her and her daughter. Over the past few months Amy had received rape and death threats in person as well as online due to the nature of her work. The situation has continually gotten worse, raising serious concerns regarding her and her family's safety.
