United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Detention Of Journalists Renée Jones Schneider And Liz Flores
Journalist Renée Jones Schneider was detained alongside her colleague Liz Flores while covering a protest demonstration against the killing of a black man Daunte Wright by a white police officer. According to Jones Schneider she was apprehended despite informing the police that she was part of the press.
Ecuador: CFWIJ Condemns The Xenophobic And Sexist Attacks Against Alondra Santiago
Alondra Santiago, a journalist and political commentator for Café con JJ, faced a barrage of online hate after her comments on President-elect Guillermo Lasso’s first public speech on April 14. The journalist criticized the last part of the speech where Guillermo Lasso implied that he and his wife would be parents of pregnant adolescents. Referencing the ongoing debate to decriminalize abortion in Ecuador, Alondra commented, “We don’t need them to be our parents. We need to be able to decide...They are not pregnant adolescents, they are raped girls and adolescents.” Following her statement, Alondra was targeted by xenophobia and insults. This incident is not the first time Alondra has faced a smear campaign for her views and political commentary. CFWIJ condemns the online trolling against Alondra Santiago and commends her integrity.
Russia: CFWIJ Condemns The Raid Of Doxa Student Journalists’ Homes
Moscow - Russian authorities raided the homes of four student journalists, two of whom are young women, as well as the homes of their parents.
The students were targeted for demanding their civil right to protest and have since been detained on criminal charges.
Myanmar: CFWIJ Condemns The Abduction Of Myo Myat Myat Pan By Myanmar Police Authorities
Myo Myat Myat Pan, an ex-employee of Myitkyina News Journal, was abducted by police authorities on April 14. The journalist was reportedly arrested on orders from the military council. According to Myitkyina News, the plainclothes police officers took the civilians away in cars around 6 p.m. Her whereabouts remain unknown after her arrest. CFWIJ condemns the abduction of Myo Myat Myat Pan. Despite Myo Myat Myat Pan no longer pursuing journalism, the authorities detained her anyway. We demand Myanmar Junta authorities release Myo Myat Myat Pan immediately.
Kyrgyzstan: CFWIJ Condemns The Detentions Of Journalists Covering The Elections
Four journalists, including two women journalists, were detained by the police on three separate occasions during their coverage of the national elections. At least one of these reporters was also attacked in the field by a civilian.

Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns Constant Postponement Of Journalists Semiha Şahin’s And Pinar Gayip’s Trial
The 13th hearing of the trial against journalists Semiha Şahin and Pınar Gayıp was held today in İstanbul. The court ruled incomplete elements of the case-file to be completed and adjourned the trial to July 14, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the constant persecution against journalists. We demand Semiha and Pınar’s acquittal immediately.
Botswana: CFWIJ Condemns The Legal Harassment Against Michelle Teise
Michelle Teise, a correspondent for a news outlet, Moeladilotlhoko News Boiler, was arrested on January 28, in Gaborone along with four other colleagues. Michelle was released along with her colleagues on February 7 after police charged them with two counts of criminal trespassing for entering two houses on January 25 and 27. The crew entered the houses in search of Obakeng Badubi, a 37 years old man who had disappeared on January 4, 2021. Michelle, with her fellow reporter and crew, was investigating his disappearance as the outlet publishes the stories of disappeared people.
Egypt: CFWIJ Welcomes The Release Of Solafa Magdy And Her Husband
Journalist and human rights activist Solafa Magdy and her husband, photojournalist Hossam al-Sayyad, were finally released earlier today after spending almost seventeen months in extrajudicial state custody. During her time in prison, Solafa was reportedly subjected to torture and denied medical aid.

Gazete Yolculuk muhabiri Buse Söğütlü hakkında terör suçlamalarıyla açılan davanın üçüncü duruşması bugün görüldü. Mahkeme, duruşma savcısının esas hakkında mütalaasını hazırlamasını ve gazeteci hakkında iddianamede bulunmayan ‘kamu görevlisine hakaret’ suçlamasından ek savunma yapmasını talep etti. Turkey: CFWIJ Condemns The Legal Harassment Against Journalist Buse Söğütlü
The third hearing of the trial against Gazete Yolculuk reporter Buse Söğütlü on terrorism charges was held today. The court ordered the trial prosecutor to prepare its judicial opinion and make an additional defence from Buse on the allegation of ‘insulting a public official. The next hearing was postponed to September 14, 2021. The Coalition For Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the case against the journalist on groundless charges. We demand Buse's immediate acquittal. Journalism is not a crime.
Hong Kong: CFWIJ Condemns The Denial Of Bail To Journalist Claudia Mo
Journalist and lawmaker Claudia Mo’s communication with foreign news outlets was cited as reason to deny her bail by legal authorities in Hong Kong. Claudia Mo’s property was seized in January 2021 and she remains in custody since February 2021 under Hong Kong’s National Security Law.
China: CFWIJ Condemns The Smear Campaign Against Journalist Vicky Xu
The Chinese authorities resorted to a slander campaign against the Chinese Australian journalist, Vicky Xu. The journalist, who regularly reports on the human rights crisis in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, opened up on Twitter regarding the state-backed harassment she has had to face through new media outlets and online trolls for her work.
The Philippines: CFWIJ Condemns The Unprovoked Threat Against Chiara Zambrano And Her News Team
Chiara Zambrano from ABS-CBN, and her news team were on an assignment in the west Philippines sea close to Palawan province. The journalist was investigating where Filipino fishermen relocated after losing their former fishing grounds to Chinese vessels. The news team was headed towards a reef surface to interview Philippine military detachments who presumably provide security to fishermen anchored there. On their way to Ayungin Shoal, the Filipino crew spotted a Chinese coast guard ship and received a radio message to identify themselves. The boat operator could not respond as the message was in English, and he did not understand. Moments later, the Filipino vessel carrying Chiara Zambrano and her news team was chased by two missile-equipped Chinese boats until they returned to Palawan region. CFWIJ is concerned by this drastic and unjustified threat to Chiara Zambrano and her team.
United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Sexist Online Attacks Against Natalie Higgins
Last month, journalist Natalie Higgins opened up about the vicious online trolling that she has endured since entering the journalism industry. Natalie spoke about the sexual nature of the comments and the absence of any support from the social media platform despite several complaints. CFWIJ stands with the journalist in the face of such hate and hostility.
