Malta: CFWIJ Condemns The Misogynistic And Derogatory Comments Made Towards Norma Saliba
Norma Saliba, the head of PBS News, was subjected to sexist slurs by controversial commentator Leone Ganado. His comments were posted during a live stream Norma was hosting with Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech. Leone made sexist remarks directed at Norma and later called her a political prostitute. Norma filed a complaint with the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) and requested Leone retract his hurtful comments. After widespread criticism, Leone issued an apology and swore to never cross the line in the future. CFWIJ condemns the humiliation Leone Ganado inflicted on Norma, and we hope he will sincerely stand by his apology.

State representatives walked out in “protest” from a virtual hearing in Jineth Bedoya’s case. The hearing aimed to determine the role of the Colombian state in the ordeal that Jineth went through in 2000. This is the latest in a series of attempts by the state to impede the investigation.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Threats And Organized Trolling Against Julie Dicaro
Writer and editor at “Deadspin” Julie DiCaro shared harrowing trauma she suffered because of mass trolling in her recently published book, “Sidelined: Sports, Culture, and Being a Woman in America”. Julie shared two major instances from 2013 and 2015 when she was massively attacked and threatened online. The journalist locked herself in-home and tried to hide her identity after receiving rape and death threats. CFWIJ condemns the toxic trend of mass trolling and feels sorry for what Julie had to go through. We stand in solidarity with the journalist and demand that giant social media platforms make amends to cull the toxic trends of online threats against journalists.

Mahkeme, 10 Ekim Ankara Katliamına dair istenen iddianamenin dosyaya eklendiğini bildirdi. Dosyanın bir sonraki duruşmaya kadar incelenmesine karar verdi. Duruşma 15 Haziran 2021’de görülecek. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ) olarak davaların sürekli ertelenmesini kınıyor, yetkililerden gazetecilerin derhal beraat edilmelerini talep ediyoruz. Turkey: CFWIJ Urges Turkish Authorities To End The Intimidation Of Journalists Through Legal Persecution
The third hearing of the case against Olcay Büyüktaş Akça, the senior editor of Cumhuriyet Newspaper, and former reporter Alican Uludağ, was held today in İstanbul. The court decided to examine the added indictment case-file and adjourned the next hearing to June 15, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) denounces the continuation of the legal persecution against journalists. Reporting the truth is not a crime but a fundamental duty of journalists. We demand Olcay and Alican’s immediate acquittal.

The fifth hearing of the trial against journalist Seyhan Avşar was held today in İstanbul. Seyhan was tried for “identifying a public officer as a target for terrorist organizations”. The court decided Seyhan’s acquittal. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) welcomes the court verdict and demands similar decisions to all journalists who are on trial. We reiterate once again; Journalism is not a crime.
Croatia: CFWIJ Condemns The Threat Of Dismissal Given To Maja Sever For Speaking Her Mind.
Journalist Maja Sever was given a dismissal warning by her employer organization when she spoke about the misogynistic culture prevalent in the firm during an interview. She took this decision following the repeated requests she had made with her organization to address the issue but realized they fell on deaf ears.
Canada: CFWIJ Condemns The Verbal Harassment Of Lauren Boothby
Reporter Lauren Boothby was harassed by a group of miscreants while on duty. The situation would have become dangerous since one of the men among the group has already been charged with engaging in hate crimes. According to Laura, the police was not on the scene at the time of the incident.
Saudi Arabia: CFWIJ Condemns The State Persecution Against Nassima Al-Sadah And Calls For Her Release
Columnist and women's rights activist Nassima al-Sadah was detained by authorities on July 30, 2018. Nassima endured threats and assault in prison and was restrained during the interrogation procedure. Starting in February 2019, Nassima was held in solitary confinement for one year. She fiercely campaigned for women's rights, focusing on their participation in politics and an end to the country's ban on women driving. Just a month before her arrest, the ban was lifted. CFWIJ calls for the immediate release of Nassima and other prisoners of conscience. We demand Saudi authorities to drop all charges against Nassima and release her immediately.
Pakistan: CFWIJ Extends Support To Women Journalists In Pakistan Campaigning To Defend The "Aurat March"
Women journalists in Pakistan initiated a campaign the night of March 11, 2021, to defend the annual Aurat March, a protest rally that takes place on the International Women's Day in the country. The march came under threat after doctored videos and propaganda messages began circulating on social media, claiming that it was an anti-religious procession. The issue became worse when right-wing male journalists lent their support to this false narrative.
Iran: Sepideh Qolian Suddenly Transferred To A Different Prison. CFWIJ Expresses Deep Concern Regarding Sepideh’s Sentence.
Sepideh Qolian was suddenly shifted to a different prison facility on March 11, without warning. Sepideh is currently serving a five-year-prison sentence for covering a workers’ rally and reporting on the torture she experienced in state detention. During her conflict with state authorities, Qolian has been targeted with a vicious slander campaign on national television, as well as arbitrary legal decisions.

Tucker Carlson attempted to underplay the violence that women journalists face by targeting The New York Times reporter, Taylor Lorenz. The day after the International Women’s Day, Loren took to twitter to urge her audience to believe women who come forward with allegations of sexual harassment, citing the emotional toll such experiences has taken on her.
