Saudia Arabia: CFWIJ Welcomes The Release Of Nouf Abdulaziz
Writer and human rights activist Nouf Abdulaziz was released from Saudi prison on February 10. Nouf was arrested during the authorities’ crackdown against activists and journalists in May 2018. The slew of detentions came before the Kingdom lifted the ban on women driving. Nouf’s release is conditional, which means she may still face jail time if she continues her activism. Nouf was held in Saudi detention for over two and half years for advocating for women's rights and denouncing the male guardianship system.

Habertürk sports presenter Hande Sarıoğlu had to resign as a result of the pressure she faced after the dance video she shared on her social media. The Coalition For Women In Journalism condemns the media outlets that target Hande and share the news with sexist messages against her. We demand Habertürk respect the private life of its employees.
South Africa: CFWIJ Is Extremely Alarmed By The Horrific Attack On Dimakatso Ratselane
Lesedi FM current affair anchor Dimakatso Ratselane was severely stabbed, allegedly by her husband. Ratselane is in critical condition and fighting for her life in hospital. On Wednesday, neighbours found Ratselane bleeding heavily and called an ambulance. It’s reported that the violent attack on the journalist continued for hours. CFWIJ is highly disappointed to learn about the suffering of Ratselane. We wish her a quick recovery and urge the police to catch the assailant as soon as possible.
Ethiopia: CFWIJ Condemns The Statement Of The Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority In Response To The Threats Faced By Lucy Kassa.
Three gunmen entered journalist Lucy Kassa’s house, physically assaulted her, and took equipment from her house. To make matters worse, the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority, instead of supporting a journalist in such distress, claimed that since Lucy was not “accredited as a journalist” and statements in her support were ‘wrong”.
Qatar: CFWIJ Stands In Solidarity With Ghada Oueiss In Her Lawsuit Against The Saudi Leadership
Broadcast journalist Ghada Oueiss is committed to fighting back the vicious online smear campaign against her, reportedly led by Saudi leadership. Ghada has filed a lawsuit against Saudi and Emirati regimes stating that her privacy was compromised to tarnish her character and career. The journalist has always presented a critical view on human rights abuses in the Middle East and Gulf states. CFWIJ stands in solidarity with Ghada in her pursuit of the unjustified torment she suffered.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns Charter Communications For Their Discriminatory Acts Against Five Women Ex-Employees.
Journalists Roma Torre, Kristen Shaughnessy, Jeanine Ramirez, Vivian Lee, and Amanda Farinacci filed a complaint against Charter Communications with the city Human Rights Commission. The complaint claimed that Charter Communications snubbed their work for the Emmy Awards submission consideration because of the conflict between the two parties.
Netherlands: CFWIJ Condemns The Online Hate Speech Against Egyptian Journalist Reem Abdellatif
Egyptian journalist Reem Abdellatif was targeted with an online threat over her journalistic coverage. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by these organised trolling campaigns against journalists. We demand Dutch authorities to ensure the journalist’s safety. Escalating online threats against journalists could cause severe consequences.
Saudi Arabia: CFWIJ Welcomes The Release Of Feminist Activist Loujain Al-Hathloul
Loujain Al-Hathloul was finally released on Wednesday night after spending 1001 days in prison. She had been framed under allegations of “espionage” and “conspiring” against the kingdom because of her activism for women’s rights and criticism of the Saudi authorities.

The two journalists are facing charges of being a member of an armed terrorist organisation and spreading propaganda for a terrorist organisation. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by the constant adjournment against journalists to intimidate. We demand Semiha and Pınar’s acquittal immediately.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) harassed and attempted to intimidate journalist Brandi Morin when she visited the Unist’ot’en Healing Camp, according to her tweet on Tuesday. Brandi was visiting the area alongside Amber Bracken to shoot a “series”.

Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Jinnews Reporter Melike Aydin’s Acquittal Immediately
The third hearing of the trial against Jin news reporter Melike Aydın was held in Izmir today. Melike faces charges of "being a member of a terrorist organization". The prosecutor requested from the court that the evidence against Melike must be investigated and the secret witnesses heard. The court postponed the next hearing to June 8, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) reiterates that journalism is not a crime. We demand Melike and all other journalists, who are on trial, must be acquitted immediately.
